When God Created Your Soul
Edith Cortés
Before the first dawn was born,
when silence had not yet learned
the language of the stars,
God imagined your soul
as the most perfect
of His eternal masterpieces.
From that moment,
the universe understood
that beauty
would not dwell in flowers,
nor in the oceans,
nor even in the endless sky,
but in the light
that would forever
live within you.
It was not your eyes
that made my existence fall in love.
It was the invisible peace
that lives within them,
the tenderness
that turns winter
into a silent spring.
When your voice
whispers my name,
the clocks forget to move,
and time,
for the very first time,
learns the privilege
of standing still.
Your hands
do not seek to possess.
They simply embrace,
as trees embrace the wind,
as the rain embraces
the thirsty earth,
as the dawn embraces
hope itself.
And then I understand
that true love
never needs to be loud.
It simply remains.
Should the stars
cease to shine,
should the moon
hide her face,
should the seas
forget the rhythm of their tides,
should the universe
close its infinite eyes...
I would still find you.
Not because destiny
would lead me to your side,
but because my soul
learned your name
long before
our hearts
ever beat for the first time.
For there are loves
that are born on Earth...
And there are others
that began
long before time itself,
when God,
with infinite patience,
wrote our names
upon the very same page
of eternity.
